A "Dream" coming true: Sports Complex nearing completion.

"When you dream, dream big...As big as the ocean blue...‘Cause when you dream it might come true.”

POMEROY – About two years ago I quoted those lyrics from a Ryan Shupe song when writing about a group of Meigs High School alumni who were embarking on a fund raising program for the development of several community projects including a new sports complex on the Meigs campus. Since the new high school was built in the late 1960s, football games have been played at the old stadium in Pomeroy. Now, through the efforts of the Meigs Local Enrichment Foundation (MLEF) and their many contributors, the “dream” of a sports complex on the MHS campus is becoming a reality. It is anticipated that the entire project will be completed this fallRecently Mike Bartrum, MLEF president, announced that the sports complex work had been fully funded.

Construction of the track is nearing completion. This week sidewalks around the entire track were being poured, and the track itself, now filled with crushed limestone, was being readied for the next step, the application of a “soft topping.” Concrete had also been poured where the bleachers will be located and some of the lighting was in place. Rain slowed work on the project this spring, but June was a breaking point in the weather so the construction could move forward.

A new entrance to the cross country track was completed, and the football field was re-graded and top soil delivered to the site. While the weather has been hot but dry, much progress has been made on the complex. In a report presented at a recent meeting of supporters, it was announced that the concession/entry/toilet facility is nearing completion; the underground conduit is being installed and the field light foundations will follow; and the long jump and high jump concrete bases have been completed.

It was also announced that the field irrigation system is 80 percent complete; the perimeter concrete sidewalk is currently under construction as is the concrete pad for the visitors’ bleachers, and the track perimeter fence will be started any day.According to the report the utilities (water, sewer and electric) are scheduled to begin soon and the foundations are currently underway for installation of the new home Marauders bleachers and the press box with its viewing deck.

Current Figures

The architect's estimate for the current no-frills design with a grass field is roughly $1.6 million. Below is the current estimate on how much each section is going to cost.

Fencing $0.1 million

TOTAL:      $1.6 million

Capital Campaign

When the levy to support the High School Athletic Complex failed, many thought that the project was finished and that donations to the project would have to be returned, but in the words of former college football coach Lee Corso, "not so fast my friend". A large group of people, including teachers, parents, alumni, business owners, and many others with a deep concern for the future of education in the Meigs Local area, banded together with a new resolve to save the worthy program. Additional donations have continued to come in from your friends, neighbors, and the business members in the area, while at the same time work on the project has continued through the diligent efforts of a smaller core group of individuals. The project has been pared down to a more workable model with a lot of the desired "bells and whistles" removed. Sorry, unless donations exceed our expectations, there will be NO artificial turf. What we will have is a sports complex that the people of Meigs Local can point to with pride and shout out "see what we have"! We had a dream and we kept that dream alive.

Now it is up too you. The cost for the new complex is now estimated at $1,600,000. Exact figures coming soon. We are about $300,000 short of this goal and we are looking to you for help. What will you get for your efforts in the capital campaign?

First, a new practice football field between the Middle School loop road and the existing football field. The existing baseball field will not be modified at this time. Expansion will be to the East with a shift of the football field and the installation of a new 8-lane 400 meter track. New bleachers for home and visitors, including a press box, will be installed. A new structure, serving as a "Gateway" to the facilities, will also house ticket sales and entry control. New concession stands for baseball and football, walks, steps/ roads, restroom facilities, fencing, lights, gates, sound system and a scoreboard will serve as a facility to highlight Meigs High School Athletics and a magnet to bring new people and business to the area. Now it is up to you. We have kept the dream alive, but if it is to become a reality it will need your help! Not your neighbor, or the State of Ohio, Meigs County, but you! Our children and our future are depending on YOU! Help us build the complex by donating to the Meigs Multipurpose Complex Capital Campaign. Together this dream WILL become reality.
